Arduino Leonardo berbeda dari Arduino yang lainnya karena ATmega32u4 secara terintegrasi (built-in) telah memiliki komunikasi USB, sehingga tidak lagi membutuhkan prosesor sekunder (tanpa chip ATmega16U2 sebagai konverter USB-to-serial). Hal ini memungkinkan Arduino Leonardo yang terhubung ke komputer digunakan sebagai mouse dan keyboard, selain bisa digunakan sebagai virtual (CDC) serial/COM port.
